Tilapia fish is not as fatty or soft as salmon. Moreover, it does not have the flavor or firmness as the tuna has. To some people, it is one of the boring fish. If you also fall in this group who underestimates the power of tilapia, then you have to make the pan-fried tilapia. 

This pan-fried recipe will be perfect for turning your dinner into a gala affair and that too, at a very low cost. This fish is inexpensive in comparison to others. So, bring the fillets of tilapia and indulge in the bliss.

  • all-purpose flour – 1 cup
  • Garlic powder – 1 tsp
  • Onion powder – 1 tsp
  • Chili powder – 1 tsp
  • Cumin powder – ½ tsp
  • Tilapia fillets – 6 ounce
  • Kosher salt- as needed
  • Black pepper – as needed, freshly ground
  • Canola oil – 1 tbsp; if you don’t have canola oil, you can use vegetable oil too
  • Cilantro leaves – 2 tbsp
  • Lime wedges – as needed, to garnish


  • Take a large bowl and add the flour along with onion and garlic powder and mix well. Now tip the chili powder as well as cumin powder and mix again. 
  • Take the fillets of tilapia in a flat tray and sprinkle salt and pepper. Coat each fillet thoroughly with pepper and salt. 
  • Keep them aside for half an hour so that the fillets absorb the salt and pepper. 
  • Next, place each fillet on the bowl of flour mixture and coat both sides properly. Shake the fillets so that the excess flour gets removed from the. 
  • Put flour-coated tilapia fillets on a plate.
  • Take a non-stick skillet and put it on medium heat. Pour the oil, and as soon as the oil becomes hot, add the fillets one by one. Fry both sides of the fillets so that the sides turn golden and crunchy. 
  • Do not add all the fillets at a time. Fry them in batches to make sure they are correctly done. 
  • When done, take them out on the serving plate and garnish with chopped cilantro. Place lime wedges on the sides and serve hot.

Alternative Recipe For Pan-Fried Tilapia

You can prepare the pan-fried tilapia in another way too. For that, you need tilapia fillets, 2 tsp of Cajun seasoning, 3 tbsp of self-rising flour, ½ cup of yellow cornmeal, 2 tbsp of olive oil and 1 tbsp of butter. 

In a plate, put the fillets and sprinkle some of the Cajun seasonings and coat them thoroughly. In a bowl, mix the flour, yellow cornmeal as well as leftover seasoning. Put the fillets in the bowl and coat each of them very well. Shake the excess flour from each and place them on a plate.

Add the butter as well as olive oil in t skillet and put it on medium heat. Add the fillets and fry both sides of them till they become golden and crispy. When done, squeeze the lemon on each of the fillets. Top them with chopped parsley and serve without delay. Your delicious tilapia is ready.
